Finding a MEDICAID Community

In this informative video, Chelsea and Morgan from Maintain Me Senior Services discuss an important topic for seniors and their families: how to find an assisted living facility that accepts Medicaid. During the video, Chelsea and Morgan provide useful resources for finding assisted living facilities that are Medicaid certified, including state and federal government websites, as well as private organizations that specialize in senior care. They also discuss important questions to ask when considering an assisted living facility, such as the types of services and amenities provided, staffing levels, and the facility's track record of providing quality care. Additionally, Chelsea and Morgan explain the various Medicaid programs that may be available to seniors, such as Medicaid for Long-Term Care, and offer tips for understanding the eligibility requirements and application process.

If you or a loved one is considering assisted living and have questions about Medicaid, this video is a must-watch. Chelsea and Morgan provide clear, concise information that can help you make informed decisions about your senior care needs.

Memorial Day Activities for Older Adults in Senior Care

Just because our senior loved ones are in assisted living or other care homes doesn’t mean they cannot be a part of the Memorial Day celebrations. Here are some fun and meaningful Memorial Day activity ideas for the elderly in senior care:

1. Visit a nearby military landmark

Memorial Day can be an excellent occasion for seniors in assisted living or retirement communities to get outside and enjoy outdoor experiences. They can visit a nearby military cemetery or monument with fellow residents and lay some flowers to pay their respect.

2. Decorate Common Spaces

Decorating shared spaces like the common room, hallways, kitchen, and garden can be one of the fun Memorial Day activity ideas for the elderly in senior homes. It will bring some cheerfulness to the facility and lift everyone’s spirit.

 3. Organize a trivia night

Organizing Memorial Day games and trivia nights are a great way to celebrate the occasion. Senior living residents can share stories and experiences related to wars and previous Memorial Days. It’s a great way to socialize and make new friends. Trivia nights can also be one of the best Memorial Day activities for seniors with dementia since it requires them to rehash memories and stimulates their brain.

4. Letter writing event

Writing letters to active or retired veterans to thank them for their service can be one of the wholesome Memorial Day celebration ideas. Senior veterans can show their appreciation and solidarity towards fellow soldiers through those letters. Many organizations deliver letters and care packages to service men and women.

SHO COVID Campaign

Senior Housing Options is leading the way in awareness and action about the resilient COVID-19 Virus

In the wake of the statistic that over 80% of people who have died from COVID-19 are over 60, Senior Housing Options (SHO) has launched a robust campaign aimed at reaching 100% vaccination of our communities’ older adults which will help save lives.

Dedicated to providing residential communities and caring services to enrich the lives of older adults in Colorado at our five Assisted Living and six Affordable Housing communities across the state, SHO has partnered with the Department of Health and Human Services and  LeadingAge on a campaign that has been dubbed SHO Us Safety! SHO was previously awarded a β€œVaccine Equity and Access Program” grant from the same funder in 2022. SHO’s Home Office is working with a seasoned Wellness Coordinator based at one of the properties to create incentives for staff and residents to take the updated, bivalent Covid-19 Booster that was released in September 2022. Employees who will have been vaccinated between September and May will receive a payroll bonus, while vaccinated residents will receive a gift card.

Vaccination clinics will be offered, free of charge, to residents, staff, family members, and neighbors of our facilities at six locations between May 4-11. These clinics will be provided either by local health providers or the Colorado Department of Health. Refreshments and/or a  meal will be provided at those sites on the day of their respective clinics. The urgency to complete the vaccinations by the end of May is rooted in the decision by the Biden  Administration to end the federal state of emergency, which has afforded a host of benefits and awareness campaigns since the advent of COVID-19, on May 11.

While many are of the opinion that COVID-19 is no longer a danger to public health, the fact that one of our Assisted Living communities recently sustained over 30 positive cases and remained in outbreak status for several weeks, testifies to the reality of the virus’ resilience and reinforces the need for protection from harmful effects such as hospitalization, prolonged fatigue, and even death.

The dates and sites of the clinics are as follows:

β€’ Madison House Assisted Living (Cortez, CO) – May 4 from 10:00am – noon.

β€’ Mesa Vista Assisted Living (Parachute, CO) – May 8 from 10:00am – noon.

β€’ Barth Hotel Assisted Living (1514 17th St., Denver) – May 10 from 10:00am – noon.

β€’ Park Hill Assisted Living (1901 Eudora St., Denver) – May 10 from 10:00am – noon.

β€’ Benjamin Square Apartments (Eaton, CO) – May 11 from 10:00am – noon.

β€’ Olin Hotel Apartments (1420 Logan St., Denver) – May 11 from 10:00am – noon.

What is Social Capital?

In this video, we will explore the concept of social capital and its importance in maintaining healthy and fulfilling relationships. Our hosts, Morgan and Desiree, from "Maintain Me Senior Services", will dive into the topic and explain how social capital plays a crucial role in the lives of seniors.

Social capital refers to the networks, relationships, and connections that individuals have with others in their communities. It can include things like trust, reciprocity, and shared values. This social currency can have a significant impact on our well-being, and it's essential for seniors to maintain strong social networks as they age. Morgan and Desiree will share their insights and experiences working with seniors and explain how social capital can help combat social isolation, which is a common problem among older adults. They will discuss how seniors can build and maintain social capital, including participating in community activities and volunteering. They will also touch on the importance of technology in helping seniors stay connected with loved ones and their communities.

Overall, this video provides a valuable introduction to the concept of social capital and its importance in maintaining strong relationships, particularly for seniors. Whether you are a senior yourself or have loved ones who are aging, this video is a must-watch for anyone interested in promoting social connectedness and improving quality of life.

May is Better Sleep Month

Better Sleep Month takes place in May every year. It is observed to encourage people to get adequate sleep daily to get all the benefits it offers. It also shows how poor sleep can disrupt lives. Gone are the days when you brag about how little you sleep but, just like diet and exercise, sleep is crucial to physical, mental, and emotional health. A survey conducted by the Better Sleep Council found that two out of three respondents reported impaired sleep due to stress. One night per week, one-third of Americans experience poor sleep at least and 16% are diagnosed with stress-induced insomnia.

HOW TO OBSERVE BETTER SLEEP MONTH

  1. Get a comfy mattress

Get a comfy mattress to celebrate Better Sleep Month. They do wonders for sleep patterns as a non-to-comfy mattress can cause problems.

  2. Spread awareness

Spread awareness about the month. It helps to bring others in on the celebration.

Cinco de Mayo

A weekend filled with food, fun and culture, Denver’s Cinco de Mayo "Celebrate Culture" Festival puts the spotlight on The Mile High City’s vibrant Latino population. With more than 400,000 attendees expected, it’s one of Denver's most fun and family-friendly events. This year's festival will feature live music and dance performances on three stages.

May 6–7, 2023

Cinco de Mayo commemorates the victory of the outnumbered Mexican army over French forces, providing the momentum and national confidence for the Mexican people to drive the foreign power from their country. Today, Cinco de Mayo celebrates the tradition of freedom and acknowledges the beauty of Latino culture.

Denver's Cinco de Mayo "Celebrate Culture" Festival  has been a Mile High tradition for more than three decades! Three stages will provide live entertainment from morning until evening, featuring mariachi, salsa, norteΓ±o and many other genres of Latino music and dance.

Other events during the festival include the annual Cinco de Mayo Community Parade  on Saturday, May 6, from 11 a.m. to noon, a taco-eating contest, a lowrider car show and the famous Chihuahua race!

As you stroll through Civic Center Park, check out vendors displaying Mexican folk art and handcrafted goods.

Food is a big part of Cinco de Mayo, and there will be plenty of it at the festival. Hundreds of vendors will be serving up tacos, enchiladas, burritos and more of the best Colorado Mexican cuisine. Green chile is a Denver culinary staple, so expect these offerings to be the best of the best.

11 Minutes Could Lengthen Your Life

Just 11 minutes of moderate physical activity per day may lower one's risk of premature death, according to an analysis published Tuesday in the British Journal of Sports Medicine.

The researchers analyzed data from nearly 200 studies involving a total of more than 30 million participants from around the world, who self-reported their activity levels for at least three years. The team then looked at the association between physical activity and 22 distinct health outcomes, including 14 types of cancer, making it one of the largest analyses of its kind.

The results indicated that people who were moderately active for 75 minutes per week β€” meaning they engaged in activities like hiking, walking briskly, cycling to work or playing actively with their children β€” had lower risks of overall mortality, heart disease, stroke and various cancers relative to people who were not active.

The researchers estimated that 1 in 10 premature deaths, defined by the World Health Organization as deaths between ages 30 and 70, tallied in their analysis could have been prevented if everyone had engaged in moderate physical activity for 75 minutes per week.

That's half the amount of exercise recommended by the WHO and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Both say adults should get at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity per week. Globally, 1 in 4 adults don't meet these recommendations. In the U.S., fewer than half of adults do.

The new research underscores the idea that even a little physical activity is better than none, said Leandro Garcia, an author of the analysis and a public health lecturer at Queen’s University Belfast.

"Many people think that to get moderate levels of physical activity, or to meet these recommended levels, they need to go to structured sessions of exercise or really do extra-strenuous activities, when in reality, activities that we do in our routines could also be very beneficial," he said.

Garcia added that as a general rule, moderate physical activity can be thought of as anything that elevates your heart rate while still allowing you to maintain a conversation. The types of movement that entails depend on an individual's age, health status and overall fitness level.

But Amanda Paluch, an epidemiologist and kinesiologist at the University of Massachusetts Amherst who was not involved in the new analysis, cautioned against thinking of 11 minutes as a minimum or maximum daily target.

"This is a very broad, generalized number, so putting a lot of stock in that specific number would be a little challenging," Paluch said.

Past research has generally shown that brief bouts of physical activity daily can improve people’s health.

Date(s) - 05/18/2023
12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

SPEAKER:
Eileen Doherty, MS
Executive Director
Colorado Gerontological Society

Home sharing provides older adults another option for living independently in the community. Some older adults share homes due to financial needs, personal preference, or to find meaning and give back to the community.

Home sharing is becoming more available. The session will explore the pros and cons of home sharing, companies that offer home sharing, and resources that can provide guidance when making a decision to either share your home with another individual or to leave your current home or apartment and enter into a rental agreement to share someone else’s home.

Cosmos Exhibit

Vance Kirkland depicted his own imagined cosmos.

Kirkland (1904–1981), namesake of Kirkland Museum, was among the most important Colorado and regional painters of the 20th century. During the last half of his career, Kirkland’s imagination led him to create numerous series depicting the evolution and expansion of his own universe, culminating in his vibrant Dot Paintings.

Kirkland developed multiple series of paintings, each traveling outward from his first depictions of Nebulae Abstractions (1954–1964) to the far reaches of his universe. This exhibition takes you through the major series of Kirkland’s outer space paintings, accomplished during the second half of his career, culminating in a new series he was working on when he died in 1981, Energy of Forms in Space.

Our first temporary exhibition of Kirkland’s work in 20 years features examples from eight series of the visions of Kirkland’s cosmos from 1954 to 1981.
