Veteran's Day

Veteran’s Day is November 11th. The Maintain Me team wanted to take a moment to thank all Veterans for their service and honor a few loved ones as well.

Morgan would like to honor:

  • Her father-in-law Howard Jenkins cir. 1965 who served in the Army during Viet Nam. He is still with us.

  • Her Uncle-in-law Ted Worth who served in the Army. He is still with us.

  • Her Uncle-in-law, Kent Worth who served in the Navy (Photo from 1972-1973). He is no longer with us.

  • Her grandfather William Spurlin who served in the Marines during WWII and the Korean war. He is no longer with us.

Julie would like to honor:

Her father "Pops" the pilot of B-17s in WWII.  She honors him and his two younger brothers, who also joined the military.  One became a Navy pilot and the other an Armor Gunner on a B-17. All three returned home after the war.

One of the bombers her father Co-Piloted was "Murderer's Row", named for the batting order of the New York Yankees. He survived his 25 missions, with only a few FUBARs (mistakes).  He then became a test pilot for the US Army Air Corps.

The team would also like to wish an extra special Veteran's day to our Business Office Manager, Josie! She served in the Navy on board a destroyer for four years.

Dia de los Muertos and Halloween

Day of the Dead!

Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), is a Mexican holiday where families welcome back the souls of their deceased relatives for a brief reunion. The holiday is celebrated each year from October 31st - November 2nd while October 31st is Halloween, November 2 is Day of the Dead.

Watch a short video from the Maintain Me staff where we remember loved ones.

Candy Donation

Have too much of Halloween candy on your hands? Afraid of eating it all yourself (me!)? In preparation for Veteran's day, consider donating it one of these charities.

Operation Gratitude
The Halloween Candy Give Back Program has been connecting communities with their Military, Veteran, and First Responder Heroes each fall since 2007. Volunteers from all 50 states and Washington D.C. share a portion of their excess Halloween candy with Operation Gratitude. We then assist in distributing the candy to deployed troops, local military units, veterans, and first responders, providing a sweet opportunity for grateful Americans to thank those who serve our nation.

Halloween Candy Buy Back
The Halloween Candy Buy Back organization also supports veterans but it does so by partnering with dentists’ offices and other businesses that will “buy back” your candy – usually by offering a trade involving cash, toothbrushes, sugar-free candy or other items.

Spooky Treats

Desiree and Julie delivered some treats to some of our partner facilities earlier this week.

Stay tuned for a special video post from the Maintain Me staff later this week sharing memories of loved ones in celebration of Dia de Muertos (Day of the Dead).

Estate Planning Awareness Week

This is National Estate Planning Awareness Week, and A Little Help wants to help you make the most of it! Estate planning is a powerful way to protect your loved ones and to support the causes closest to your heart.

If you’re wondering why you should be thinking about your will, we’re here to debunk the most common myths about making estate plans:

  1. It’s too early for me to think about my will! We hope you won’t need to use it for many years to come, but it is never too early to start planning ahead. Whether you are eighteen or eighty, having a will can give you peace of mind that your wishes and loved ones are taken care of, no matter what.

  1. I wrote my will a couple of years ago so I’m set. Have you acquired property? Do you have children? Life changes fast, so it is recommended that you update your will at least every five years.

In addition to protecting those you love, I want to share one powerful way you can support A Little Help in your estate plans that will cost you nothing during your lifetime — making a gift in your will. It’s an important way to secure A Little Help’s vital work for generations to come and allows you to create a legacy. Click the link below to learn more.

Julie of Maintain Me was fully engaged in service to my family going above and beyond anything we expected from her service. She educated us along the way in our search and showed kindness in doing so. I would recommend Maintain Me, particularly Julie, to anyone who has a placement need.

Join the CGS Aging in Place Series: Using Medicare Benefits to Stay in Your Home
10/21/2021 1PM-2PM

Medicare does not pay for room and board. However, Medicare pays for occupational and physical therapists who can come to your home to provide assistance to maintain independence. Medicare pays for durable medical equipment and adaptive devices to make your home “aging friendly”. And lastly, Medicare will pay for telehealth services that allow you to continue to receive care, monitor health conditions, and bring services to your home.

The official National Case Management Week theme for 2021 is Case Management: Care, Compassion, Community.

ACMA hopes you will celebrate NCMW 2021 and recognize the dedication, compassion and patient care outcomes achieved by case managers in your organization. Across all care settings, case managers are making the difference!

Morgan Walked to END Alzheimer's

Morgan walk 1.JPG

Why I walked in Milwaukee this year...

My cousin Kristen has been the Chairperson for the Alz Walk in Milwaukee for the last few years. The cause is near and dear to our hearts because our Grandma Mabel and our Grandpa Paul both died from complications from the disease.

My Mom Holly and her sister Cheryl were both caregivers for their parents. When Mabel and Paul started to get sick, my Aunt Cheryl (pictured in the wheelchair) and her husband moved in with my grandparents, leaving their lives and children in Milwaukee to come help in Colorado. They ended up staying out here for over 15 years. Everyday they supported Paul and Mabel, and the rest of the family! Doctor appointments, keeping up with the house, making sure everyone was sleeping, eating, and meeting their basic needs.

They say "it takes a village" when caring for a young child, but it also really takes a village when caring for an older adult too. Especially an older adult living with dementia or Alzheimer's Disease. My Aunty C and my uncle were very important parts of the village back then! And after my grandparents passed, they became my earthly support when I really missed my grandma and grandpa. Now my Uncle has passed away, and my Aunt Cheryl lives alone. She is started to feel the affects of aging, and often declines to join on events like baseball games or even going to the Alzheimer's Walk because it is just too taxing. Well this past weekend was different!

We got out the wheelchair collecting dust in the basement of her house in Milwaukee and said "you're coming with!" I got to help her have a special life memory and be her support person that day, it was meaningful in every way.
She said over and over how special it was to be there together to help #walktoendalzheimers and it was so special for my Mom and I to be there with her. To all walk together to honor their parents, my grandparents.
No one chooses this awful illness, and no one can say for certain if it will happen to you or not, or when it may strike.

Morgan and Aunt.JPG

This weekend, we celebrated life! We celebrated being together, walking in life to support a cause deeply important to us.The memories we created are treasures, even if one day we need to be reminded of them or revisit these pictures to live in the moment again.

Tell your loved ones how you feel about them every day, and let us all work together to find a cure....and if we keep fighting, maybe one day we will find the cure.

Using Music To Break Through To Dementia Sufferers

U.K.-based Music for Dementia is an organization dedicated to raising awareness for the integral role music can play in dementia care. My organization, Sage Stream, is a senior entertainment and education network that provides daily live-stream programming to older adults in all settings to help relieve social isolation SageStream has been fortunate to partner with Music for Dementia to bring some of their artists on board. I thought it would bring a nice international flair but soon came to realize that these artists across the pond are doing some wonderful work with music to help those with memory and dementia issues.

Daily Music for Dementia Care

Glenn Bassett, also known as 'My Mate George' lives in London, England, and plays guitar and sings. He created Teatime Tunes, a daily song release – a brilliant idea to help engage and foster positive behaviors from those suffering memory loss and dementia.

Every day in the U.K., George brings his unique style to YouTube, performing a familiar song with familiar props and cues, providing a consistent and comforting presence for dementia sufferers and their caregivers. He created it out of his own necessity – as a long-haul COVID-19 survivor, he simply did not have the stamina to perform long sets as he used to do.

The components make it compelling.

  • Regularity and timing. He sets a regular time for his videos to be released, at 3 p.m. each day in time for mid-afternoon snacks.

  • Date and song number. Each day he displays the date, to help orient people in time (a little poster in the shot also reminds the viewer that it's 3 p.m.). He also has a song-number displayed, so that the viewer is aware lots of other songs have already appeared, and that this is a daily routine.

  • Props. He has a number of props that provide reassuring continuity, but also a bit of variety to encourage the viewer to notice little changes each day. Each day the mug for his tea changes, for example, and he briefly talks about that.

  • Food and drink. Caregivers often mention how tricky it can be to encourage their loved ones to eat and drink regularly, especially important with some medications. So "G" enjoying a cup of tea – or cuppa, as he says – and a snack is a very deliberate part of the videos, to gently encourage the viewer to do the same.

  • Familiar songs. Of course, the main element of each video is the song. The key is to encourage participation rather than simply passive viewing, so he tries to make every song jaunty and foot-tapping, even the slow ones.

Establishing a Routine

Each day establish a consistent routine with a loved one at a particular time. Pick one of their favorite songs, have a snack ready and sing together. If you can't be there yourself, participate by Zoom or FaceTime.

Encourage a home health aide or nursing assistant in a loved one's community to work with you to establish a consistent and familiar routine. Using music of course is preferred, as the benefits are well-documented.

Taking Music Outdoors

Jessa Liversidge is a Scottish singer and singing leader based in North Yorkshire, U.K. A versatile singer with a wide range of repertoire Jessa has taken her singing outside since March 2020, singing her weekly "field sing" with the real songbirds in all weathers. Older audiences love the nature, the sounds and the solitude. At first just recording her material, she decided to take a chance and "go live."

The heightened atmosphere of a live performance engaged her audience in real-time, reacting and commenting as she sang. The 'field sing' idea was never intended to be a "perfect performance" but a natural one, singing with the birds, in all weathers.

Every Saturday, whatever the weather, she has gone outside, to fields, lanes or woods, and performed whatever song seemed apt at the time. Some weeks she has a song in mind; other weeks, she decides five minutes beforehand.

Jessa also leads a selection of choirs and singing groups, all with an emphasis on singing for health, well-being and fun! Using a loop pedal and pre-recorded tracks, she is able to create a live online choir experience suitable for all abilities.

Getting Your Loved One Outdoors

Perhaps each day when the weather is suitable, you take the same idea of establishing a consistent routine with a loved one by going to a park for lunch or snack. Mix in solitude with listening to some of mom or dad's favorite songs. Or simply find Jessa's or George's programs and watch and sing-along together.

Connecting Music and Well-being

Inês Delgado is a violinist whose greatest passion is to explore how music can help others, and her purpose is to create meaningful musical moments to enhance people's health, well-being and happiness.

She has been the music ambassador for Turtle Song since 2019. In its 13th year, the organization brings music, songwriting, movement and singing to people with dementia and their caregivers. It was featured on the BBC documentary, Holding Back the Years.

She is also the 2020-21 London Philharmonic Orchestra Foyle Future First violinist, where she gets to work closely with the orchestra, have individual lessons with the players and receive numerous other training opportunities.

Inês put on a program for Sage Stream that consisted of reflective music listening. She plays a piece and then suggests emotions and feelings that it might draw out from you like gratefulness or calm. She then plays another selection and asks viewers to reflect on that as well.

Use Music to Alleviate Stress for Your Loved One

I am sure we are all not violin virtuoso's like Inês but her concept is a great one, especially for calming agitation in people with dementia. You could try playing classical music in mom or dad's room, watching one of Inês's programs or simply recreating her program yourself or in conjunction with an activity person. Using music to alleviate stress, induce calm and to help people reflect is a healing experience.

I am incredibly humbled and excited about the caliber of artists we have on Sage Stream but even more impressed with their mission-driven devotion to older people.

What Is Assisted Living Week?

ALW was established in 1995 by the National Center for Assisted Living (NCAL) to help spread awareness about long-term senior living options, as well as to celebrate the individuals and families that these types of programs support throughout the year.

What Is Assisted Living?

In honor of this special week-long celebration, we wanted to share a few facts and resources about assisted living.

The NCAL defines assisted living communities as facilities that provide support for individuals who may need help with daily activities, such as cooking, cleaning, dressing, bathing, taking prescribed medication, etc.

And though loved ones may not need 24-hour nursing care everyday, they are given direct access to nursing care and health care services, should they require it.
