Memorial Day Weekend

Here is how to watch the Colorado National Guard's Memorial Day Flyovers

memorial-day-3432665_1920.jpg

The Colorado National Guard will fly a formation of F-16 Fighting Falcons over a wide swath of the state on Monday morning to commemorate the Memorial Day holiday.

The flyovers will happen between 10 a.m. and noon over the Parker Cemetery, Grand Junction and Silverton, according to a news release from the national guard.

Approximate locations and times where the aircraft will be visible are:

  • 10 a.m. – Parker

  • 10:40 a.m. – Grand Junction

  • 11:05 a.m. – Silverton

The Colorado National Guard said the flyovers serve as training for the pilots and don’t cost taxpayers extra money.

"The Airmen of the COANG are honored to take part in Memorial Day events all across the state,” 140th Wing Commander and U.S. Air Force Col. Daniel Fesler said in a news release. “As you hear the roar of freedom rip across the Colorado skies this weekend, I ask that you take a moment to remember the men and women who courageously gave their lives in service to our country. Remember their names, remember their stories, and most of all remember their sacrifices."

Success Story

Unforeseen Changes - Another Success Story

plan B.jpg

A couple years ago I had helped a lovely family find an alternate option than the husband was currently living. He has dementia however wasn’t really fitting into his memory care assisted living. The wife was struggling with finding a more family-oriented setting that he can have others to communicate with. This was also during covid where there were many barriers to the move such as quarantine and visitation restrictions. We were able to find a wonderful home that this family fit in very well and they were able to accommodate outdoor visitation, so the wife was comfortable about the change. This was a great fit and everyone was happy.

About a year later there was an unforeseen change where the assisted living was sold and a new owner had taken over. We all know this can really change a culture and unfortunately this is going to be a huge change for this family. As a transition specialist we can never plan for these unforeseen changes but always tell our families to call if they are unhappy with any changes or care. I was so happy to have this family trusted me enough to call and help them find another place, even though ANOTHER transition is our biggest goal to avoid, we were able to find a place this family was VERY happy with. Every one of us hopes to never have to move someone again but it’s our job to set expectations and let families know that not every situation goes exactly how we expect. We want them to know that regardless of what happens they will always have us in their court to do care conferences, address issues even after the move and then come up with a plan if the issues cannot be addressed in a matter everyone is happy with.

A big thank you to this family for having hope and making the hard move to best serve your family and their care.

The Future of Bees

columbine-bee-dave-gilbert.jpg

Found on every continent except Antarctica, bees are vital pollinators, making possible much of the food humans eat. In recent years, however, crucial bee species have experienced significant loss. Since the 1990s, the bumblebee population has plunged almost 90%. Additionally, since 2006, a malady called Colony Collapse Disorder has afflicted honeybee populations.  Join Active Minds as we dive into the world of bees and examine the factors that are affecting these important species.

Happy Cinco de Mayo

Ten Fun Facts You Might Not Know About Cinco de Mayo

Cinco de mayo.jpg

1. Cinco de Mayo Isn’t Mexico’s Independence Day
Cinco de Mayo is often confused with Mexican Independence Day, but it actually commemorates a significant battle during the Franco-Mexican War that took place in a town called Puebla. The Mexican Army, who were considered the underdogs, ended up overtaking the French and came out victorious. Mexican Independence Day, on the other hand, actually occurred on September 16, 1810—about 50 years earlier.

2. The Mexican Army Beat Crazy Odds
The Mexican Army was largely outnumbered and poorly supplied. In fact, they were known as a rag-tag army and only had outdated guns at their disposal. And yet, as little as 2,000 Mexican soldiers—some of whom hid behind tall cactus plants—defeated 6,000 French soldiers during the battle, which lasted from daybreak to early evening.

3. The General Was Honored in a Super Special Way
Ignacio Zaragoza was the Mexican general who led the army that defeated the French on May 5, 1862. He was born in what's now Goliad in southern Texas and was only 33 years old when he led his troops to victory. Puebla was renamed Puebla de Zaragoza in his honor.

4. Families in California Partied First
A few weeks after the Battle of Puebla, Americans and Latinos in California heard about the valiant efforts of Mexican soldiers through newspaper reports. Residents in the state were so excited, they celebrated with parades of people dressed in Civil War uniforms. And in Northern California, one town partied with drinks, food and banquets—it was most likely the first Cinco de Mayo fiesta in the United States!

5. FDR Helped Commercialize Cinco de Mayo
Although it was celebrated in the United States just weeks after the Battle of Puebla, Cinco de Mayo wasn't officially recognized here until 1933. That's when President Franklin D. Roosevelt helped create the "Good Neighbor Policy" which aimed to establish positive exchanges and relationships with our Latin American neighbors.

6. Mexico Celebrates the Military on May 5
While Cinco de Mayo is celebrated with tons of food, drinks, and partying in the United States, Mexicans take a slightly different approach. The holiday is mostly celebrated in the state of Puebla and in addition to food and drinks, locals put on a military parade with people dressed as French and Mexican soldiers, cheer on brightly colored floats, and reenact the battle on its original site.

7. It's All About the Mole Sauce
Sure, tacos are a staple at any Cinco de Mayo party, but in Mexico, there's one meal that stands above the rest. The holiday's most beloved dish is mole poblano, a sauce made with dozens of ingredients including chili peppers and chocolate served over chicken. To celebrate to the fullest, Puebla hosts the International Mole Festival—a two-day festival where celebrity chefs explain how to create the ultimate mole.

8. Kids Get May 5 Off School—In Mexico, That Is
Cinco de Mayo is not a federal holiday in Mexico, but luckily for children, schools are closed for the day!

9. The United States Took Everything Up a Notch
While Cinco de Mayo is largely a regional holiday in Mexico—mostly celebrated in Puebla—the United States holds coast-to-coast celebrations, especially in cities that have a large population of Mexican Americans like Chicago, Los Angeles, and San Antonio. In fact, Denver's "Cinco de Mayo Festival" is believed to be one of the largest Cinco de Mayo celebrations anywhere, with an estimated 400,000 people attending over two days to participate in parades, carnival rides, and a taco eating contest.

10. Americans Eat Millions of Avocados on May 5
Since Americans eat plenty of guacamole on Cinco de Mayo, avocado sales boom every year. We eat upward of 80 million pounds of avocados on Cinco de Mayo in the United States alone!

Two NEW BILLS have been passed that effect our aging population!

Untitled Design (24).png

We are so proud of all the progress we have made since Maintain Me joined GDPRA. In the last year both House Bill 19-1268 and House Bill 20-1101 have passed.

HB19-1268 requiring disclosure of compensation.

HB20-1101 protecting the right of Family Choice.

How does this effect you?

When working as a nurse case manager in the hospital system referring to every level of care had been pretty process driven due to preferred provider lists which already took into account quality outcomes. There was one level of care that did not follow these specific processes and that was discharging patients to IL, AL, and MC. Personally, I didn't have many relationships with placement agencies nor was there any way to vet them.

Now that I have stepped out of the Case Management role and into the placement world I feel so blessed to be part of setting that standard. Being on the board for GDPRA and watching the organization be part of these two bills being passed has helped our industry make huge strides in very necessary regulation. I feel personally responsible to take one step further and reach out to all of my partners in the industry to make you aware of this new legislation and how it effects you and the people you serve.

I encourage you to watch video I created explaining why we decided to focus on these two bills first and give an overview of their impact on older adults and their families.

Morgan's Success Story

unnamed.jpeg

Well it is with great pleasure that my success stories are all about our new consulting program!

My first success story is a woman who lives independently at home, Sally, who has a Parkinson's like disorder that will get progressively worse. She was referred to Maintain Me by her Physical Therapist. Sally is sharp, and she is our perfect client, can you guess why? Because she called us early, to make a plan for the future! She is doing just fine at home right now, but she wants a plan in place so when she does need the extra support--she already knows what that is going to look like, and where she will be. I was able to walk through her home with her and suggest she look at getting grab bars installed. But then we just sat and had a very open and frank conversation about what her options might be. We talked about the pro's of living in a community like: Peer support, meals being provided, and someone else doing the laundry! Sally had been so focused on the negative aspects of having to move and the like, that she had not stopped to consider all the benefits! When I was readying to leave she told me she felt relieved, not only to know some of the great options that were available to her, but also because now she knew who to call at any time when she wanted to talk about what's next and how to navigate the process.

Another consulting success story brought me to Jim's house. He had recently had a small stroke, and his family out of state was very concerned about him- rightly so. Jim doesn't have any local family because his kids are attending University out of the country for the time being. I offererd the family members that I would happily go meet with Jim and get a better understanding of his immediate needs. I set up a zoom for his kids and brother to join us; Jim, myself, and my lit up lap top got to work. It was not easy for Jim to accept that he could indeed use some extra help. But I could see from his home environment that he needed help managing. So we were again, matter of fact and down to the point. We worked together to establish his personalized care strategy- his goal was to increase quality of life and have more time for social life and his writing. OK-We can work with that! I helped him meet a few neighbors who could provides rides to their local rec center. We set up a home care agency to help him- with laundry, keeping the house clean, and all the things he was having trouble keeping up with. He didn't need CARE, as much as day to day support managing a home and recovering from a stoke, and still focusing on the things that made life rich for him- his writing, trips to the rec, and long chats on the phone with other retired professors. We still chat every now and then and I certainly welcome his calls for quick advice or a phone number for a plumber.

I truly love our program, the way we wrote it is straight forward for our clients to know what they are getting for their money, and how long it will take, and that we remain their steadfast contact for support, now matter what. I think it gives clients a way to be independent in their lives, having a person they call when they need something, and not relying on someone else to manage what they would prefer to handle, like any adult who has lived a rich and meaningful life!
